There
has been much controversy about archival stability in silver based
photographic materials for many years. In 1981 Ilford published
it's research
with guidelines for the most effective fixing and washing techniques
of film and paper. It is these guidelines that I follow for final
processing of all prints that leave my darkroom. Martin Reed of
Silverprint
in London published two articles in Photo
Techniques magazine,
the July/August 1996 issue and the November/December 1996 issue,
which outlined and expanded on the Ilford technique and disposed
of many myths about archival processing. It was exhaustive research
to say the least. I highly recommend reading these articles if you
need detailed information on the process. It is indeed a very serious
and important issue that many labs simply do not consider fully.
